Please meet me on your path to the past!
Where I Am on My Professional Path
I am a full-time, dedicated and persistent professional genetic and traditional genealogist, who works for both independent clients and as a contract researcher for larger companies. With over six years experience as a genetic genealogist, and over fifteen years as a traditional genealogist, I have now delivered over four hundred projects, with more underway. Completed projects have routinely received excellent reviews and positive testimonials, generating happy clients and repeat business. I have also published two magazine articles and blog posts, yet remain focused on the rewarding challenge of client research.
My work blends genetic and traditional genealogy knowledge with meticulous, methodical research skills, sound analysis, creativity and insight. For genetic genealogy cases, I frequently navigate the complex variables of endogamy, pedigree collapse, double cousins, and multiple pathways of descent, and work with autosomal DNA, Y-chromosome DNA, X-chromosome DNA and where applicable, mitochondrial DNA test results. For all cases, genetic and traditional, research is supported by years of daily experience working in and with a broad range of geographic and historical contexts, cultures and peoples, and key associated record sets and sources – including particularly challenging niche areas and subjects such as pre-1850 United States, Upper Canada and Lower Canada, and pre-1870 African American ancestors, and Acadian, French-Canadian, Germanic, Irish, English and Scottish ancestors. This knowledge base allows me to fluidly adapt to the demands of genetic genealogy, in which research paths often change direction to seek ancestors in unanticipated locations. Supplementing my research skill base is my ability to work with old handwriting and documents written in French, German, Swedish, Slovak and Latin.
How I Work on My Professional Path
Each prospective client’s case and objectives are carefully reviewed to develop tailored research strategies and target key sources for evidence and analysis. All research is conducted according to the Association of Professional Genealogist’s Code of Ethics, and the Genealogy Proof Standard as outlined by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. All research and findings are subjected to rigorous analysis, avoiding confirmation bias. Additionally, I seek to understand and analyze evidence within historic, socio-economic and cultural contexts.
Client deliverables generally include a report, a research calendar with source citations, and documentary evidence. Depending on each individual project and the many factors involved, the specific content and nature of deliverables will vary. Despite the complex nature of most cases, my reports are pleasantly readable, neatly synthesizing and summarizing an often considerable body of diverse and complex evidence into comprehensible packages.
Together, we can discuss your objectives and challenges as you travel to your past. Why not reach out confidentially at susanaucoincw@gmail.com? I would love to hear from you.
