Transforming Black Family Histories Across Generations
Lisa Hazell is a genealogist and multidisciplinary artist dedicated to uncovering and illuminating Black family histories, with over twenty years of professional experience.
Lisa has provided visual references for production in Broadway theater, feature films, major network and streaming television productions, and news media. She has collaborated with visionary directors and artists on historical projects, offering meticulous photo research for character development. Her collaborations with celebrities, dignitaries, and public figures have sharpened her ability to create compelling historical narratives.
Guided by a deep respect for the resilience and fortitude found in Black family stories, Lisa weaves these narratives into both historical and contemporary contexts. She has engaged in genealogical and historical projects that explore themes of identity, culture, and community.
Lisa's transformative Paperdoll Journal Ancestry project evolved from an online platform launched in 2015 to a contemplative studio practice established in 2025. By intertwining genealogy with storytelling traditions, she ensures that oral histories remain alive, piquing personal curiosity about the past. This blending of family history with cultural narratives uniquely enriches collective memory and strengthens family values, allowing descendants to honor their ancestors’ experiences. Her work aims to engage and connect inter and cross-generational audiences and cultures by bringing important stories to life.
Lisa's academic journey began with African American history and art appreciation at Howard University, profoundly shaping her understanding of cultural narratives. She earned a Master’s degree in Communication from The Johns Hopkins University, specializing in Public Relations and Political Communications, further honing her storytelling craft.
Lisa's speaking engagements highlight African American genealogy and aim to enlighten and inspire her audiences, fostering a deeper understanding and connection to history and heritage. She’s driven by values of respect, quality, and sustainability, and aims to inspire contemporary awareness and foster greater civic engagement.
