I started out doing my own family research, armed only with the names of all four grandparents, whom I was sure sprouted from under four separate rocks. Since then I have
  • traced my maternal grandmother's line back to Germany in the 1700s
  • traced my paternal line back to early nineteenth century New York, including the family's ownership of the oldest house currently in Albany
  • documented two instances where my parents' lines crossed, once in New York around the time of the Revolutionary War, and once again in Wisconsin in the mid-1800s
  • mapped the migration patterns of several ancestors as they moved from the East Coast to the Midwest and eventually ended in California
  • met many cousins from all sides of my family (including my mentor and inspiration, Goldie)
  • realized that a lot of "those people" I learned about in history classes were really "my people" - who knew?
