Tanya Teat Foreman Named Recipient of 2025 Kenyatta D. Berry African American Research Scholarship
19 June 2025The Association of Professional Geneaogists (APG) is pleased to announce that Tanya Teat Foreman of Richlands, North Carolina, USA, has been selected as the winner of the organizations’ 2025 Kenyatta D. Berry African American Research Scholarship.
The owner of Family Matters Genealogy, LLC, Foreman is an experienced genealogist, historical researcher, educator, and writer with a deep passion for uncovering ancestral stories. She specializes in African American genealogy, with expertise in New England, Northeastern, Southeastern, and Caribbean regions. Foreman has earned certificates in Genealogical Principles and Genealogy Research from Boston University as well as a Master of Arts in Public History from the American Military University.
“Genealogy is important to never forget our ancestors,” Foreman said upon learning she was the recipient of this year’s scholarship. “An African proverb says, ‘We die once when the last breath leaves our body. We die a second time when the last person speaks our name.’”
Foreman is currently developing presentations on African American patriots of the American Revolution for the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission’s America250 Planning Committee.
She is a member of both the Onslow County (NC) Museum Advisory Board as well as the Onslow County Genealogy Club & Historical Society. She has delivered genealogy-focused talks for local libraries’ Juneteenth and Black History Month events. Foreman is also a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. with leadership roles in financial management and chapter governance.
