The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) will conduct a roundtable on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 during the National Genealogical Society Conference at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri.  The topic of the roundtable, which will be moderated by David Rencher, CG, is Into the Future with the Records Preservation and Access Committee. The roundtable will be held from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Chouteau A&B rooms.

Beverly Rice, CG, Roundtable Coordinator, encourages members to attend saying, “This is an opportunity for all conference attendees to become aware of our genealogy communities’ combined efforts to maintain access and preserve the world’s records.  The topic of records preservation and access is of such importance to the genealogical community that APG has opened this roundtable to all interested individuals.”

The roundtable is normally open only to APG members; however, because of the importance of the topic all genealogists and interested parties are invited. In addition, the roundtable is an ideal time for APG members to network, share ideas and learn how other professionals market themselves.

Lecture proposals for the 2009 Professional Management Conference are now being accepted. The theme for the conference, Get Your Business On Target encourages all members of the genealogical profession to look at ways to improve both their genealogical and their business skills.

Lectures should:

* Challenge genealogical professionals to think outside the box

* Help professionals evaluate and review their current business

* Encourage professionals to meet the demands of the twenty-first-century client

Lectures must be new, original, and on topics relevant to professional genealogists, but do not need to be specifically genealogical. Presentations from other professional fields that would benefit professional genealogists will be considered. Lectures will be one hour, including questions; however, consideration will be given to longer or interactive presentations.

Proposals should be submitted electronically to admin@apgen.org either in Microsoft Word or PDF format and should include the following:

* Name, address, telephone, fax, and e-mail address of speaker

* Title of the presentation

* Detailed description of the presentation (one or two paragraph summary)

* Short (50 words or less) summary for the program brochure

* Short (50 words or less) biography for the program brochure

* Biography of 150 words for publicity and PMC syllabus

* Audio visual requirements

* Recent lectures given

Honorarium is $400 for a one hour lecture and $650 for a two-hour workshop.

Educational Conference Scholarship Designed to Encourage and Support Newcomers

 
WESTMINSTER, Colo., Feb. 2 – The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) is providing a scholarship opportunity for a young genealogist to attend its annual Professional Management Conference (PMC). The deadline for the Young Professional Scholarship is rapidly approaching.  Applications must be received by February 28, 2008.

 
The recipient, who will be selected in the spring, will attend the conference on September 3, 2008 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The PMC is held in conjunction with the Federation of Genealogical Societies annual conference. The scholarship includes conference registration and a $500 award toward travel and accommodations.  Further information on the conference can be found at http://www.apgen.org/conferences.

 
Candidates for the 2008 award must be between the ages of 18 and 25 years as of 1 May 2008, be enrolled as a high school senior, undergraduate, post graduate or graduate within the last twelve months of an accredited university or college, and have at least a 3.0 gpa (on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent in another averaging system).

 
The application requirements include

 ·         Listing of extracurricular activities, organizations, and volunteer activities;

·         A letter of recommendation from a dean, principal, or faculty advisor that also indicates the applicant’s current or graduating grade point average; and

·         A letter of recommendation from an individual who has witnessed the applicant’s interest in genealogy.

 
Applicants also must submit 500-750 word answers to each of two questions relative to genealogical records and the applicants’ anticipated career.
