As part of the ongoing APG Professional Development Webinar Series, APG has scheduled another free webinar on Wednesday, 26 September 2012, 8:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Jean Wilcox Hibben, CG will present part 2 of Avoiding Misunderstandings: Communication Skills for Professional Genealogists. The webinar is open to both APG members and non-members. The webinar will also be recorded, with the recordings uploaded to the APG Members Only area as a benefit to APG members.
Almost everyone has had the experience of saying something that is perfectly clear in one’s own mind but, when received by the listener, is translated into something completely different. Of course, the mis-communication can be something as simple as the listener being hard of hearing, a language barrier, or some external noise that is interfering with the message or the means by which the message is conveyed. However, sometimes it can be a choice of words, tone of voice, or something less obvious like the receiver’s own biases or preconceptions. “I cannot get that information in anything less than three weeks” can be interpreted as “I can have it for you in less than three weeks.” Learn some of the ways to avoid misunderstandings when dealing with clients (and prospective clients), booking organizations, archivists and librarians, and others professional genealogists communicate with in the operation of their businesses.
